Until International Building Code changed crawl spaces were not required to have insulation. For this reason, many older homes have little to no insulation in the crawl space. Often times this will cause homeowners higher energy bills as well as cold floors.
In newer homes the insulation installed is generally fiberglass insulation installed directly on the walls or in the floor above. Through time this fiberglass insulation will absorb moisture causing odors. This moisture also adds a lot of weight to the insulation which in turn makes it droop or fall down from the floor above. If insulation is not making contact with the surface it is supposed to be insulating, it is virtually useless. This insulation can also be a bedding ground for small rodents if the crawl space is not sealed properly. Properly insulating your crawl space will give homeowners a much happier, healthier home!
